All oneworld® member airlines serving Japan continue to maintain their flights to, from and within the country, following the earthquake and tsunami that hit the region earlier this month. Many of them are helping the relief activities. Latest information on flights to, from and within Japan
Extra frequencies have been scheduled by a number of them - by Cathay Pacific Airways between Tokyo and its Hong Kong hub, and by Japan Airlines to and from airports in Tohoku the region hit most severely by the disaster. To facilitate this, Japan Airlines has transferred aircraft that had originally been scheduled to operate other routes, which has meant some changes to timetables in other parts of its domestic network.
Schedules for some international flights to and from Japan have also been altered temporarily. For instance, British Airways is routing its London Heathrow-Tokyo Narita service via Seoul for the next few days, and moving its Tokyo Haneda operation to Narita temporarily, while Qantas is operating its Tokyo Narita flights via Hong Kong.
Most oneworld airlines have been offering special fares on their Japanese routes and waiving usual restrictions on reservation changes.

Ground transport to and from Tokyo's international airports continues to operate, but with some changes to normal schedules in some cases. Passengers are advised to allow more time than usual to get to Tokyo's Haneda or Narita airports. - International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), on behalf of other UN organisations including the World Health Organisation (WHO), International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and International Maritime Organization (IMO), confirmed in an official statement on 18 March 2011 that there are no restrictions on air travel to Japan. Helping the relief efforts
Japan Airlines has offered to carry relief goods, supplies and personnel, arranged through recognised public organisations, free of charge on its domestic and international route network.
oneworld and its member airlines have offered their condolences to all those affected by the disaster.
A number of the alliance's carriers have launched appeals to help raise funds for the relief efforts:
- Japan Airlines has pledged JPY7,500 for every 7,500 reward miles donated to the efforts by members of its JAL Mileage Bank (JMB) frequent flyer programme through a special giving scheme operated via its website. JMB members registered in Japan can donate via http://www.jal.co.jp/en/shien/ JMB members registered in other countries or members without internet access can make donations via their region's JAL Mileage Bank Centre.
- American Airlines is working with the American Red Cross, raising funds through a similar scheme. AAdvantage members can receive a one-time award of 250 AAdvantage bonus miles for a minimum donation of US$50, or 500 AAdvantage bonus miles for a donation of US$100 or more to the American Red Cross Japan and Pacific Tsunami Fund. - British Airways is providing assistance and support to several charities and relief organisations besides flying teams to Japan to help with the relief effort.
- Cathay Pacific is working on a number of fronts to provide relief to those affected by the events in Japan. A staff appeal has been launched at the airline and its subsidiaries with more than HK$1 million (US$125,000) donated in the first week, which will be matched dollar for dollar by the company and donated to the Red Cross. The airline will channel in-flight donations to its Change for Good programme from 24 March to 8 April 2011 to help UNICEF's relief effort. The airline has also shipped thousands of blankets to Japan for victims of the disaster.
- Finnair is inviting members of its Finnair Plus programme to donate their Plus points to the Japanese Red Cross, in donations of 3,000, 5,000 or 10,000 points.
